Match 8: Group C: Aus v. SL: Sangakkara and Mendis Pack Australia back home!

Australia were beaten in the crucial Group C match and were knocked out of the world cup tournament. This was the biggest surprise of this tournament so far.

Having lost to West Indies in the first group match, this was a must win situation win for Australia. For Sri Lanka, they have another opportunity to play against the WI. But, the fate was different for Australia this time. The ODI world champions were knocked out!

Put into bat, Warner went for a duck in the first over, caught at point playing a square cut. Ponting, notwithstanding the pressure, was bowled by Mendis. David Hussey and Johnson scored 28 each and were the highest scores.

Struggling with 94 for 6 in the 15th over, David Hussey and Johnson gave Australia a respectable total. They added 41 for the 7th wicket in 21 balls. Brett Lee hit 15 off 5 balls with 2 fours and a six as Australia added 24 runs in the last 10 balls.

Johnson remaining not out on 28 in 13 balls which had 2 fours and 2 sixes. Mendis and Malinga picked 3 wickets each.

Chasing 160, SL lost Jayasuriya for 2. It was unusual innings from him as he took 7 balls. But, Dilshan was firing from the other end as he scored 53 and added 62 for the 2nd wicket with skipper Sangakkara.

Sangakkara stayed till the end to ensure that SL reach the victory target. He also crossed half-century and remaining not out on 55 which came off 42 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. He was rightly declared player of the match for his match-winning innings.

This has sent Australia back home, to prepare for the Ashes. SL and WI qualify for the super 8 from Group C.
